The town is just 25 minutes from Johannesburg’s OR International Airport and only 15km from Johannesburg Central, giving it a unique and highly central location. The town also boasts a long and interesting history, making it one of the top places for property in South Africa.
At the age of 13 Johannes Petrus Meyer bought eleven hectares of his father’s farm, which was then called Elandsfontein (and later became Alberton). He built a house next to the beautiful Alberton stream close to where the current civic centre is today. After his wife passed away in 1870 with the birth of their fourth daughter, he decided to start a general store. He started this store and built his mansion in 1890. This spectacular mansion was miraculously left unharmed during the war and can still be seen today from the bypassing N12 freeway.
The farm, taken over by Johannes Petrus Meyer’s brother Johan Georg Meyer on his death, was then split when the four daughters of JG Meyer sold their part of the estate to a syndicate whose chairman was Gen Hendrik Alberts. A township was proclaimed and named after the General. His grave used to be in a traffic circle in a main street in Alberton. In 1939 the town became a municipality and today the town is a large industrial and urban area boasting a number of Alberton property options.
The well-known ‘Blou Meul’ shop on Van Riebeeck Street in Alberton North that specialises in firearms, knives, camping equipment, 4 x 4 gear, fishing gear and bow hunting accessories, was established in 1954 and is still doing business today. The Alberton Boulevard was another big development and was established in the late 80's / early 90's. All these historical heritage sites can be explored during one of the many tours offered here.
