Camps Bay Property - Real Estate
It is hard to believe that today’s sought-after Camps Bay property was once completely unwanted. Camps Bay was used as grazing area for the Khoi’s cattle and with the arrival of the Dutch settlers in Cape Town the area was regarded as useless. It did not provide any use as a harbour, and because of its location and harsh climate it was not suitable for the settlers to even contemplate building houses. The land was eventually granted to a Johan Lodewyk Wernich who named the farm ‘Roodekrantz’, after the red colour of the soil. The first Camps Bay property was the house that he built on the farm, which was called ‘Ravensteyn’. Johan had one son, JJL Wernich, whose widow Anna eventually married a sailor by the name of Frederik Ernst von Kamptz. It is ironic that the family that farmed in Camps Bay for more than 70 years was not the source of the name but rather the unpleasant sailor Frederick von Kamptz who only spent around ten years on the farm.
From the humble beginnings of a singular farm house the bay has transformed itself over the following decades to the point where Camps Bay offers the most sought-after property in South Africa and indeed across the world. A thoroughly modern suburb with all the modern amenities the discerning buyer would expect, yet it still manages to instil a feeling of living in a coastal village without the hustle and bustle of the city found right behind it over Kloof Nek.
Property in Camps Bay offers the well-heeled buyer a choice of luxurious apartments, coastal villas and large family homes. Due to its beautiful location on the slopes of the Twelve Apostles, Lions Head and Table Mountain, a very large percentage of properties in the bay offer spectacular views all the way down to the palm lined pristine Camps Bay beach. Camps Bay properties also reflect the immense architectural talent of South Africa, with many homes being featured regularly in the media - making it a highly regarded suburb with properties that many aspire to own.
Life in the village can be quite exciting and offers residents many different forms of entertainment. The main drive through Camps Bay real estate is on Victoria Road, which is wedged between the beautiful white beach and some of Cape Town’s finest restaurants. Not only does it offer residents world-class culinary experiences but it also offers a vibrant nightlife with many locals and foreign visitors gathering for sundowners and enjoying the spectacular sunsets. It is no wonder that Camps Bay has become the playground of the rich and famous. Camps Bay offers wonderful views of Lions Head and has a picturesque drive that takes one all along the Atlantic Seaboard property coastline to the acclaimed Twelve Apostles Hotel and then further along past Llandudno and over the rise with breathtaking views into Hout Bay.
Camps Bay also offers the more cultural a chance to enjoy wonderfully entertaining evenings at its own theatre, The Theatre on the Bay, as well as a library for those peaceful evenings at home. The family man need not worry either with three levels of schooling available within the village (preparatory, primary and high school) as well as sports fields and various activity clubs to keep the kids entertained, some of these situated at the gracious Rotunda. There are also a fair number of churches spotted around Camps Bay.
Camps Bay offers the discerning buyer the choice of some of the best real estate in the country along with a relaxed lifestyle providing an outstanding quality of life. Contact Leapfrog today for our full range of Camps Bay property options to suit every taste.
