Khayelitsha Property for Sale

Khayelitsha Real Estate

Khayelitsha is partially an informal township in Western Cape located on the Cape Flats between Table Bay and False Bay that was established in 1983 as one of the last serious attempts of the Nationalist Government to keep cities segregated along racial lines. As such very little consideration was given to the quality of Khayelitsha property and houses. The authorities presented it as a “New Home” for blacks, designed to accommodate the growing influx of people from the Eastern Cape. It was also intended to address “overcrowding” in existing townships around Cape Town namely Langa, Crossroads, Nyanga and Gugulethu. Property in Khayelitsha was seen as a solution to the problem. At the time it was intended to be a “model township” with better basic services and schools than other townships, however Khayelitsha real estate was not considered by the government to hold any value. In typical apartheid planning fashion, it was also designed as a reservoir of cheap labour destined to commute to the industrial areas and offices in the Western Cape. In hindsight it was never meant to develop as a town in its own as it has done since.

Khayelitsha cover an area of about 47square kilometres, is the home for nearly one million people and is reputed to be the fastest growing and largest single township in South Africa. Khayelitsha is situated 40km from Cape Town, 11km from Cape Town airport and a mere 4km from the Monwabisi Beach resort on False Bay where you will find the largest man made pool in the Southern Hemisphere. Khayelitsha real estate offers access to the entire major services and amenities as well as placement next to a blue flag beach. Places of interest to visit are the Look Out Hill tourist facility that consists of an art and science centre, a restaurant, a gift shop and an information kiosk. Look-Out Hill also has a look out point on the highest dune with a 360 degree view that incorporate Table Bay, Hottentots Holland mountain ranges, Helderberg, Table Mountain and False Bay. The parts of Khayelitsha close to the sea have been earmarked for further development because Khayelitsha currently sits with its back to the sea and the long term plan is to turn it around.

Khayelitsha with 66 pre-schools, 60 primary schools and 59 secondary schools is ideal for families with young kids. The roads are in good condition and most people have electricity and access to fresh water and toilets. Khayelitsha has 22 sub areas with new formal and informal areas that have been built up around the older areas. The living conditions in the township since 1994 has improved markedly and there have been many developments in the Khayelitsha. There are three very busy shopping malls with most of the national retail groups present, the newly built Distict Hospital with more than 250 beds and many easy accessible clinics in most of the suburbs. There are four well supported libraries and a number of indoor and outdoor sport stadiums. Prices in the popular suburbs of Illitha Park, Ikwezi, Bongweni, Mont Clair and Khayelitsha Large vary between R200 000 and R400 000. The residents of Khayelitsha are warm, friendly and welcoming and once you are welcomed into the community you become part of an extended family which in their culture is an honour. If you want to spend a weekend as township tourists in Khayelitsha there are many guest houses and small hotels to stay at and too many watering holes to mention. Ziba chicken, on Spine Road, makes the best grilled chicken in Khayelitsha - a whole spatchcock chicken cost R45 and a half chicken R25. You might as well buy a whole one, because you will eat it all.  There are many “tshise nyama”  braai places where you can buy ready cooked/braaied chicken, intestines ( liver, tripe ect ) boerewors sausages, chops and steak all at reasonable prices. The people really enjoy seeing “abelungu” (whites) in their neighbourhood and make every effort to make them feel welcome. There's a great sense of community in Khayelitsha - everyone knows everyone else, kids play in the streets and neighbours help each other out.
